If you're so tight on cash you should be happy they eliminated the $65 inspections and now shops are moving to free inspections when you come in.

They're saving you money!

Catharine Farkas's avatar

It's NOT the same inspection and if your car is unsafe, the State has no leverage to keep your car off the road if you can't afford the necessary repairs.

I want the state inspections to return!

Thank you for creating promotional material for the Free State Project! Keep up the good work.

I would note that Democrats can work with Liberty Republicans on areas where they overlap, such as civil liberties. The recent housing reforms, for example, were passed as a result of a coalition between Democrats and Liberty Republicans. Reform of oppressive drug / prison / sex work laws are also now possible.

After reading Anita’s missive, I donated $500 to the Free State Project! Anita herself called the FSP a “political machine”. Why would you not donate to an effective organization built around liberty and despising communism?

Catharine Farkas's avatar

Sounds like you don't understand what the FSP stands for. There is really very little overlap.

I am still angry they eliminated annual vehicle inspections. I looked at reducing my deductible so I can fix my car when I get hit by someone with no brakes and bald tires, but I can’t afford it on disability income. The state was still trying to collect the fees from mechanics who do inspections as of the summer so my mechanics are in denial that this is actually happening.

Do you know the name of the textbook company Osborne and his wife started (the one getting sued by Massachusetts because the kids can’t read)? I didn’t save the article and every time I tried to look it up I just get hits for school choice vouchers or other Osborne nonsense.

Bob Robertson's avatar

That's funny. Massachusetts suing someone else for children unable to read? https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/subject/publications/stt2022/pdf/2023010MA8.pdf

Latitude Learning Resources, I think.

Yep that’s it, thank you!

AKA Greenwood Publishing Group, Heinemann Publishing, and HMH Education Co.

It looks like they got away with the scam:

How can you teach children to read by encouraging them to guess what words mean? Doesn't that sever the connection between the sound of a word and the appearance of a word? I'm puzzled here.

Zbjoztg's avatar

You don’t see the irony of being in the ‘Live Free or Die’ State and wanting to seize control back from those who would rather live free or die?

Russ Nelson's avatar

It shouldn't be "live free or die". It should be "live free or die trying". Meaning that the struggle for freedom is perpetual.

Bob Robertson's avatar

You mean the 100 who get the best ratings by NHLA? That small number?

Jeanne Dietsch's avatar

Terrific summary, Anita! Thank you for the clear directions. Let's take back our state from Libertarian control, just as Maine has done!

Bob Robertson's avatar

You could just move to Maine.

Jeanne Dietsch's avatar

Why should I move from my home of 40 years so a tiny group of naive puppets of plutocrats can continue their efforts to turn the state into something the residents don't want? You've only gotten this far because no one was paying any attention.

Bob Robertson's avatar

First the factual errors.

"puppets of plutocrats" So you never looked into how the FSP was created? Not a plutocrat in sight. If you are talking about American For Prosperity, why not say so? Anyone can look these things up.

Also, why no objection to Granite State Progress, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Soros "Progress Now!" national political action committee? Could it be you only assign "plutocrats" to groups you don't like, even when that label is false?

"something the residents don't want" If the residents don't want it, they wouldn't have elected 100 highly-rated NHLA legislators.

"because no one was paying any attention" In point of fact, the more people have paid attention the more liberty oriented legislators get elected.

The reason the FSP settled on New Hampshire was the culture of liberty that the State has always had. The New Hampshire Advantage of low taxes and low regulation compared to other states. The libertarians are doing nothing more than promoting the culture of New Hampshire, and the founding principles that made New Hampshire the first colony to secede from Great Britain.

"Why should I move from my home of 40 years"

That's the wonderful thing about liberty, Jeanne. You don't have to move at all. Take a lesson from the Amish, visit a Shaker village.

When you have liberty, you can choose to live your life in as Communistic a way as you want to, share everything, give according to your ability, take only what you need. Liberty means you are welcome to live as you see fit with anyone who agrees with you.

Liberty means I cannot force my way of living on you.

But liberty also means you cannot force me to live as you see fit. And if you cannot stand that idea, well, Jeanne, that's on you.

Jeanne Dietsch probably knows more about the Freestaters and how they were created than anyone in the state. She has already “looked into” this and has written a book on the subject.

Bob Robertson's avatar

It's easy to believe lies when you want them to be true.

Jeanne Dietsch's avatar

Rob, it looks like I know more about how the Free State Project began than you do. Take a read: https://granitestatematters.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Who-Are-the-Free-Staters-online.pdf

Bob Robertson's avatar

No, you don't. You weren't there. All you've done is make things up to bolster your predetermined opinions. I've read your paper, I've attended your presentation. I laughed at you, repeatedly.

The fact you ignored everything I wrote above shows just who you are.

As the saying goes, don't try to teach a frog to sing. It wastes your time and it annoys the frog.

Well, to reiterate what is in the book, with footnoted sources, Sorens has worked for the Koch's libertarian Mercatus Institute since 2008. Mercatus has worked to promote the platform that David Koch ran for Vice President on the Libertarian ticket in 1980. The plutocrats' takeover of the institutions of government is well documented in Jane Mayer's Dark Money and many other books. Sorens has partnered with William Ruger, the VP of the Charles Koch Institute, for years. Do you think this is made up? It's all quite easily confirmed with the sources cited in the book, or through many others.

When people resort to name-calling and argument ad hominem, I suspect it's because that's all they've got.

Russ Nelson's avatar

Voters don't want what they voted for? It sounds like voters didn't vote for what you wanted. Isn't that just democracy in action?

Manuel Barkhau's avatar

If the Liberty Republicans are democratically elected, then what is the basis for you to say that you need to take back "our" state? In any case, why not move to Vermont if you don't like how things are going?

John Moose's avatar

Try winning on ideas not by using inflammatory language and othering those you disagree with. These people were not magically placed in office, they were actually elected. Perhaps voters do not like what you and your ilk are peddling.

Catharine Farkas's avatar

Perhaps the voters just saw an R beside the name of the Free Stater they voted for and didn't realize what their real goals are?

GunkSlinger's avatar

Are you saying that voters are stupid?

Catharine Farkas's avatar

I am saying that too many voters in NH are uninformed. Too many voters in NH are connected in their mind to the old sane Republican Party that was socially liberal and fiscally conservative (pre 2010 or so). They have not keep up with the radical Free Stater libertarian/authoritarian takeover of our state Republican Party. I am aware that libertarian/authoritarian appears to be an oxymoron, but that is what they represent. Free thinking and no regulation for what the Free Staters want and over regulations for everyone else.

As we get closer to the November elections, I think its helpful to report on what your reps are saying and voting on. It is probably the most effective way of letting the public know of the harm being done. Not to make personal attacks, just the facts.
